BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Authorities in Baton Rouge say a 12-year-old boy was taken into custody after he was found with a handgun Monday at Wedgewood Elementary School.

A spokesman for the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office tells The Advocate (https://bit.ly/NvQgvJ ) that deputies were called to the school at about 1 p.m. after another student told school authorities the fifth-grader had a gun.

Sheriff’s spokesman Casey Rayborn Hicks says a .45-caliber weapon was found in the boy’s book sack.

Hicks says investigators believe the child got the gun from a relative and brought it to school to look “cool.”

Hicks says the student did not make threats while in possession of the gun.

The child was booked on one count of illegal possession of a firearm on a school campus.
