ATLANTA (AP) - State transportation officials say crews from southwest Georgia have been sent to the metro Atlanta area to help deal with snow and ice expected to move into the region.

GDOT spokeswoman Juanita Birmingham said in a statement that 11 plow trucks and 54 employees from the southwest region of the state were sent to Atlanta Monday afternoon.

Birmingham says employees who were dispatched to Atlanta include drivers, managers and mechanics.

Birmingham says the winter weather isn’t expected to reach as far south as the area her division covers near Tifton, but the agency will be ready to respond if snow and ice do develop in her coverage area.

Birmingham says 2,130 GDOT maintenance and construction workers and nearly all GDOT personnel will be on call.
