MONROE, La. (AP) - Mayor Jamie Mayo said Monroe will have a new city engineer by the end of the month, provided the city council approves the decision.

Mayo tells The News-Star (https://tnsne.ws/1kvAuP5 ) he has a candidate in mind but declined to disclose his choice. He expects to announce the engineer in a couple of weeks.

The city has been without a full time engineer since former city engineer Sinyale Morrison resigned in November 2012. Morrison is currently awaiting trial for payroll fraud allegedly committed during her time with the city.

The city briefly hired a replacement for Morrison soon afterward, but he resigned within a few days of his hiring. Mayo wouldn’t comment as to why.

Since that time, Mayo said he’s been reaching out to different sources for candidates, including other cities, but had a difficult time finding someone who met the specifications listed by the charter and would accept the pay range.

The charter calls for a registered professional engineer with at least three years of experience. Mayo expects the salary to range between $90,000 and $100,000.

“There’s not a lot of engineers around that would take a full time job at that pay rate,” Mayo said. “I’ve interviewed some people, but we just haven’t gotten that person until now. I haven’t been sitting idle because we’ve been recruiting.”

Selecting a qualified engineer is the first step in the process. The department head would still need to be approved by the City Council, which may pose a hurdle.

Mayor Jamie Mayo said Monroe will have a new city engineer by the end of the month, provided the City Council approves the decision.
