PHOENIX (AP) - A section of northbound Interstate 17 in Phoenix’s northern outskirts is reopen following an hours-long closure after a wrong-way fatal accident in which a 34-year-old man was killed.

The accident occurred at about 3 a.m. Monday near Anthem Way when a southbound vehicle collided with a tractor-trailer rig in the northbound lanes. One lane was reopened after about four hours, followed later Monday morning by a full reopening.

The semi caught fire but the driver and a passenger got out safely. However, the state Department of Public Safety says the SUV driver was killed. He’s identified as John F. Maxwell of Anthem.

DPS spokesman Bart Graves says an autopsy will be conducted but that authorities consider a medical issue a possible cause of the accident.
