PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A freezing rain advisory is in effect Monday for the Portland area, Columbia River Gorge and parts of southwest Washington.

A number of schools are closed or opening late.

State offices in the Portland area are closed Monday but, state offices in Salem are open.

The National Weather Service says the freezing rain is a sign of the transition from the cold and snow to more typical February weather - a series of systems from the Pacific bringing rain to the Western Oregon valleys and snow to the mountains and parts of Eastern Oregon.
