JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Areas of north Mississippi could see three inches of snow late Monday through noon Tuesday.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather warning for north Mississippi and an advisory for central areas through Tuesday.

John Moore III, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Memphis, Tenn., said models are giving various readings, so it’s difficult to pinpoint the timing and exact amounts.

He said there could also be some ice mixed in with the snow.

Moore said the snow should be gone completely on Wednesday.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation and the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency are urging resident to get prepared and stay aware of changing road conditions as weather moves through the area.

Both agencies will be following weather conditions through the day Monday.

The weather service said the highest risk of winter conditions is along a line from Rayville, La. to Tupelo, Miss. where significant accumulations of ice and possibly snow are most likely. For locations to the northwest and just to the south and southeast the primary concern could be freezing rain with some ice accumulations possible.

In southwest Mississippi, freezing rain could occur beginning Monday night into Tuesday morning.

The weather service said rain is likely before midnight, possibly mixed with freezing rain with an expected low temperature around 32.

The rain is expected to continue into Tuesday morning, when temperatures will rise to a high near 40.

“If it gets cold enough, there might be some light icing on bridges and overpasses,” said meteorologist Brian Koeneke said. “There’s that potential for really light freezing rain early Tuesday morning, but it is going to warm up as we head into the day, though there is still going to be some risk for some heavier rain.”
