MARTINSVILLE, Va. (AP) - Former Virginia Secretary of Natural Resources Elizabeth Heim Haskell has died.

The Martinsville Bulletin (https://bit.ly/1nuIgFL) reports that Haskell died Tuesday at a hospice facility in Durham, N.C. She was 71.

Haskell served on the Martinsville City Council and served in the cabinet of then-Gov. L. Douglas Wilder as his natural resources secretary from 1990 to 1994.



In 2005, Haskell was recognized as the Outstanding Virginian by the General Assembly.

The author of many books and articles on the environment, Haskell was also a director and officer of the Martinsville Bulletin.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
