Mike Eruzione, the captain of 1980’s “Miracle on Ice” U.S. Olympic hockey team, praised the U.S. defeat of Russia Saturday, which required a thrilling final shootout in Sochi’s Bolshoy Ice Dome to determine the winner.

The former left wing, who led America to victory against the soviets at Lake Placid during the Cold War, tweeted his congratulations shortly after the win was announced.

“I don’t know if the US won or TJ Oshie won that was amazing. Great win. Strap on your boots gonna get exciting,” Mr. Eurzione wrote on Twitter.

Mr. Oshie scored four times in an overtime shootout with the Russians, including the winning goal that led the U.S. past Russia 3-2 as its president, Vladimir Putin, looked on.

The forward, one of the final selections for the roster, made the team in part because of his potential to come through in shootout situations.
