PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Jack Reed and Rhode Island officials are preparing to launch an education program for parents and educators that they hope will help children prepare for school in Providence.

Reed is set to join Gov. Lincoln Chafee, Providence Mayor Angel Taveras and other officials to launch the “Empowering Families” program Tuesday. The initiative includes an eight-session course for families and educators who will learn the seven life skills that every child needs to succeed.

Officials says more than 2,500 families, 240 Providence public school teachers and 160 other educators are expected to participate in the “Mind in the Making” course over the next four years.

Providence public schools and Ready to Learn Providence will offer the course in English and Spanish. Reed says participation in the program will enable parents to prepare their children for school.
