FARGO, N.D. (AP) - A movie theater company that offers alcohol at theaters in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Nebraska wants to do the same in North Dakota’s largest city.

Marcus Theaters has asked Fargo to allow it to serve beer, wine and liquor at its 14-screen West Acres Cinema complex, KFGO radio reported (https://bit.ly/1msWfAR ).

The proposal is part of Marcus Theaters’ multimillion-dollar upgrade of its two Fargo facilities to include state-of-the-art screens and new seating. The company has requested a liquor license for just $10,000, instead of the going rate of $105,000, because it says this would make its plan affordable.

The changes are part of a national trend of adding pizza, sandwiches and other foods to theaters, company officials said. Marcus Theaters now has three full -service restaurants and six lounges in theaters in other states.

Fargo Police Chief Keith Ternes, who serves on the city’s Liquor Control Committee, said he has concerns about the request.

“I’ll need some convincing as to why the city should carve out yet another in a long list of liquor licenses for another business niche,” he said.
