NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Have a question about anything historical in Newport? Ask “Gladys.”

That’s the name selected for the Newport Historical Society’s online database. It’s in honor of the late Gladys Bolhouse, who was the society’s executive secretary and curator of manuscripts from 1946 to 1992. She was appointed Newport’s first historian by the city council in 1985.

Executive Director Ruth Taylor says the name is ideal for the database because Bolhouse was such an authority on Newport’s history. Taylor says, “When someone had a question about Newport’s history, they would ask Gladys.”

The suggested name was submitted anonymously during a recent naming contest.

The database can be accessed at NewportHistory.org. It was launched in 2011.
