JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - The House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday will take up two proposed constitutional amendments, one concerning educational funding and the other the direct election of the state attorney general.
The proposed constitutional amendment advocated by Gov. Sean Parnell allows for state funds to go to private schools and is sponsored by Rep. Wes Keller, a Republican from Wasilla.
The other proposed constitutional amendment calls for the direct election of the state attorney general. It is sponsored by Rep. Bill Stoltze, a Republican from Chugiak.
In his sponsor statement, Stoltze says Alaska is one of only seven states where the attorney general is appointed by the governor rather than directly elected by the people.
