BOZEMAN, Mont. (AP) - Police in Bozeman continued to search Sunday for a suspect in a rape and knife assault who escaped from custody the previous day despite wearing leg shackles and handcuffs.

Police say 28-year-old Kevin A. Briggs fled the Law & Justice Center on foot at about 8 a.m. Saturday. He’s described as a 5-foot-5 white male of medium build.

Bozeman Police Capt. Steve Crawford says numerous officers as well as a dog failed to find Briggs Saturday. Crawford says footprints in the snow showed Briggs was still shackled.

Crawford says police are looking at procedures to determine how he got away.

Briggs is registered as a level one offender, meaning at the time of his sentencing he was not considered likely to offend again.
