WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - One man has died in a fire at a Winston-Salem apartment complex.

Officials said 11 people were forced out of their homes in the fire around 2 p.m. Sunday.

Officials said 55-year-old Ralph Phillips died in the fire that started in his apartment.

It took firefighters nearly two hours to control the blaze.

Battalion Chief Leroy Davis said investigators have been called to determine the cause of the fire.

Davis said Phillips‘ sister also lived in the apartment but was not hurt.

Dominic Delph lived in an apartment above Phillips. Delph said he had to jump out of a window to get out.

“It hurts to see that somebody didn’t make it, Delph said. He did not know Phillips well, but said he spoke to him sometimes when passing by.

Jing Ye and Shan Gao live next to the apartment that first caught fire. The fire started a few minutes after they left to take their two children to Sunday classes at their school.

“I was lucky. I was really lucky,” Ye said.
