MIAMI (AP) - Boynton Beach police have charged the parents of a 3-year-old child with abuse and neglect after the child was found to be severely malnourished.

Police charged 37-year-old Thomas Phillips and 31-year-old Champagne Gillis with felony abuse of the boy on Friday.

Authorities were called to an Atlantis Hospital and informed the child would have to be moved to an emergency room at another hospital because of the severity of his malnourishment. The boy weighed less than 25 pounds and had mouth sores that prevented him from swallowing.

Gillis told police he’d had only been eating milk and apple sauce since birth.

Both Gillis and Phillips were jailed, but were released over the weekend after posting bond. The Department of Children and Families is investigating.
