BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Jefferson County sheriff’s officials say a man accused of making a series of prank phone calls to Birmingham police is being held on $50,000 bond.

Sheriff’s spokesman Randy Christian says police and a SWAT team responded to a call about a kidnapping and hostage situation Sunday and searched houses for a woman the caller said was being held hostage.

Christian says police traced the cellphone the calls were being made from to a local restaurant and learned that the same phone was linked to two recent false reports of robberies.

Christian says 21-year-old Ervin Jamal Hill of Birmingham was charged with making a terrorist threat. It’s unclear if he has an attorney.

Sheriff’s officials say Hill told them conflicting stories about whether or not he made the calls.
