TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say a man suspected of starting multiple brush fires in the Tucson area is in custody.

Tucson police announced Monday that 33-year-old Derek Jones is being held on suspicion of nine counts each of arson of property and burning of wildlands.

San Xavier District deputies and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department helicopter were called to the active fire scene around 7 p.m. Sunday.

Authorities aboard the helicopter reported seeing a suspect running from the area, which is described as a water retention basin.

Police say Jones was arrested after a short foot chase.

It was unclear Monday night if Jones has a lawyer yet.
