SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Police say a driver fleeing from police officers in South Bend hit several vehicles and badly injured a pedestrian before the chase ended with a crash.

Lt. Tim Williams of the St. Joseph County crash investigation team says the man who was struck Monday suffered a severely broken leg and was hospitalized. The driver also was hospitalized.

Williams says the chase began when a South Bend officer tried to stop a car for having false license plates. The chase went along neighborhood streets for less than five minutes, but the car hit two moving SUVs and at least five parked vehicles, virtually destroying two of them.

Williams says other pedestrians narrowly missed being hit by the fleeing car.
