ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) - Rockford airport officials and a local community college are hoping to expand an aviation maintenance program.

The Greater Rockford Airport Authority and Rock Valley College announced the partnership on Tuesday. The school’s board of trustees and airport commissioners still need to approve it.

Under the partnership the airport authority will lease land to the school to build an aviation maintenance training facility. The building will house students studying aeronautical maintenance and repair. The new facility will be more than four times bigger than where aviation students currently attend class.

The school currently has a waiting list for the program. Officials say the new facility will increase the number of students who can participate.
