MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Former University of Miami football player JoJo Nicolas has died a day after getting into a car crash on a Miami Beach highway.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Nicolas‘ brother, Abner Davis, said Nicolas died around 5 p.m. Wednesday at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Nicolas played defensive back for the Hurricanes from 2007 to 2011. In 2012, he briefly signed with the New York Giants as a rookie free agent.

Police say Nicolas was heading away from South Beach on the MacArthur Causeway around 5 a.m. Tuesday morning when his car rear-ended a tractor-trailer.

The Miami Herald (https://goo.gl/l3RbO1 ) reports that the 24-year-old was apparently celebrating ahead of his March 3 birthday. He posted on Twitter several hours before the crash that he was starting his festivities at a South Beach night club.
