NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. (AP) - Conservation groups that want to clean up and restore part of a northern Indiana river are turning to the public to help move the project along.
The Middle Eel River Watershed Initiative will hold a public meeting March 27 at the North Manchester Public Library to outline plans for restoring that portion of the Eel River that flows through the city about 30 miles west of Fort Wayne.
The proposed restoration is being spearheaded by a Manchester University-led coalition that’s dedicated to improving the watershed’s water quality and boosting recreation along the river.
Coordinator Terri Michaelis says a $17,000 state-funded study will assess the project’s feasibility. Once that study’s complete, the group will seek more funding from sources including the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the local community.
