JAMESTOWN, N.D. (AP) - The dean of students at the University of Jamestown has been granted a leave of absence after being accused of assaulting his wife.

Forty-four-year-old Gary Van Zinderen faces a misdemeanor simple assault charge in municipal court. He’s free on a personal recognizance bond. A telephone listing for him could not immediately be found.

University spokeswoman Tena Lawrence issued a statement saying Van Zinderen was granted his leave request “to resolve this personal matter.” She says the university will monitor the outcome.

KQDJ radio reports that police records indicate Van Zinderen allegedly bruised his wife’s thigh with a suitcase while picking up children at her home on Friday.
