SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - Authorities are investigating after a Spartanburg officer shot and injured a man allegedly fleeing a traffic stop.

Spartanburg Police Capt. Art Littlejohn says officers stopped a car on Tuesday morning and smelled marijuana inside.

Officers tried to get the driver to get out of the car. The man refused, and Littlejohn says an officer fired when the man started to drive off with the officer still standing in the car’s open doorway.

The officer wasn’t hurt. The 27-year-old driver was shot twice and treated at a hospital, and police say he will face charges when their investigation is complete.

A passenger, 19-year-old Emily Cunningham, has been charged with simple possession of marijuana. It wasn’t immediately known if she had an attorney.
