COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Sara Johnson Borton has been named president and publisher of The State newspaper in Columbia.

Borton also is president and publisher of two other McClatchy newspapers, The Island Packet of Hilton Head and The Beaufort Gazette. She will continue in those roles.

McClatchy vice president for operations Mark Zieman, who oversees the company’s newspapers in the Southeast, told The State (https://bit.ly/1fuBWuR ) Borton will bring passion to her new post as a leader in public service journalism and digital journalism.

Borton succeeds Henry B. Haitz II, who resigned in December to become president and publisher of Hearst’s Connecticut Newspapers.

A graduate of Winthrop University in Rock Hill, Borton begins Feb. 10.
