HERNANDO, Miss. (AP) - Seeking to break a cycle of losing $764,000 yearly on sewer, water and sanitation services, Hernando aldermen have approved rate increases that will go into effect in about six weeks.

The Commercial Appeal reports (https://bit.ly/1cTWRcD ) the board approved raising the residential garbage rate on Tuesday from $11.50 to $13.50 and increasing the second garbage bin charge to $4. The voluntary recycling fee increases from $3 to $3.94 to match actual contractor costs.

The base rate for water rises from $6 to $9 per 2,000 gallons and the second increment, per-1,000-gallon charge increases to $2.50. As to sewer services, the city’s charge will match what the DeSoto Regional Utility Authority charges the city, with the charge remaining at half the water charge, or a minimum of $4.50.
