PHOENIX (AP) - A transient is hospitalized in critical condition after being run over by a car while he was in the middle of a Phoenix street.

Phoenix police say the accident occurred about 6 a.m. Thursday in the area of Central Avenue and Dobbins Road.

They say the man was about 21 years old, but his name wasn’t immediately released.

Police say it’s unclear why the transient was doing in the street.

The unidentified driver was on his way to get coffee and was unsure what he hit.

Police say impairment doesn’t appear to be a factor in the accident, but darkness might have played a role.
