BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont National Guard is getting some special recognition from state police.

Police are recognizing the many support missions Lt. Col. John Johnston and his pilots have conducted over the past several years in the search for lost hikers, skiers and others.

Lt. Col. Randy Gates, director of military support, says the state police and the Vermont guard have enjoyed a long-standing relationship. Because state police don’t have any of their own aviation assets, they often request Army aviation support.

Police are presenting an award Thursday to Johnston at the joint operations center at Camp Johnson.
