OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Nonessential state government employees in central Oklahoma were excused from work Thursday morning due to bone-chilling cold temperatures and icy roads.

Nonessential state services in Canadian, Cleveland, Lincoln, Logan, McClain, Oklahoma and Pottawatomie counties were reduced until 10 a.m.

State employees who are deemed essential are expected to work as scheduled. Services were expected to resume by 10 a.m.

Residents of the Oklahoma City metro area woke up to a few inches of snow on the ground Thursday morning. Temperatures hovered around 10 degrees by mid-morning Thursday and wind chills remained in the negatives. A wind child advisory and winter weather advisory is in effect for many areas.

Many schools have cancelled classes, including Oklahoma City Public Schools, and police have responded to numerous wrecks on the roads.
