MADRID (AP) - Real Madrid’s Marcelo says racist chants directed at him after the Copa del Rey semifinal against Atletico Madrid have not affected him.

A section of the away supporters remained at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium after Madrid’s 3-0 win, when Marcelo and other unused players were on the field. This section of fans reportedly directed monkey chants and insults toward the Brazil defender, who is black.

Marcelo wrote on Twitter: “I want to thank you all for the support you have given me. Even though this is not the first time it happens I can promise you that we are stronger than any kind of racism. This will never affect me or my family.”

Madrid and Atletico play the return leg on Tuesday.
