COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Police at the University of Maryland are warning of a series of dorm room thefts on the College Park campus.

The police department said in a note to the campus community Friday that the thefts by an unknown man have occurred over the last week at Denton, Centreville and Cumberland Hall.

A police spokeswoman says the thefts appear to be carried out at random.

Police say eight thefts from unlocked dorm rooms were reported Friday morning at Centreville and Cumberland Hall. The suspect in that case was a man dressed in black and carrying two bags. Those thefts occurred one week after four similar incidents at Denton Hall.

Police reminded students to keep their doors locked while asleep or away from their rooms and to report anyone who appears suspicious.
