NOVI, Mich. (AP) - An ex-convict who began asking police questions while officers investigated the fatal stabbing of an 84-year-old suburban Detroit woman has been arrested in her death.

Novi police Chief David Molloy tells WXYZ-TV that a number of items believed to belong to Bernice Schaufele were found in the home of the 46-year-old man.

Molloy tells WWJ-AM that the man is a convicted killer. He says officers arrested the man Tuesday morning.

The suspect’s name wasn’t immediately released.

Schaufele’s daughter found her body Monday afternoon inside her home in the Country Place condominiums in Novi, about 20 miles north-northwest of Detroit.

The Oakland County medical examiner’s office tells MLive.com that the victim died of “near strangling and a stab wound to the neck.”
