PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - At a time when many independent bookstores are closing, Powell’s Books in Portland is investing $1 million in a remodel.

In addition to improvements such as a new front entrance and skylights, the work will upgrade the former car dealership to modern earthquake and safety codes.

KGW reports (https://bit.ly/1iNVAVk ) about 150,000 books had to be moved elsewhere in the store for the six-month remodel. The store remains open during the work and plans a rededication in August.

Powell’s Books calls itself the largest independent used and new bookstore in the world
