HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) - Huntington police and the FBI are investigating the death of a woman while she was being taken into custody at a hospital.

Police chief Skip Holbrook tells media outlets that 66-year-old Annie Earle of Huntington left St. Mary’s Medical Center against medical advice on Saturday. Holbrook says Earle was a mentally challenged patient.

Police found Earle in a nearby parking lot and took her to hospital.

Cabell County Circuit Court denied a mental hygiene order for Earle. Holbrook says she hit one officer in the face after another officer told her the hospital wouldn’t provide additional treatment.

She struggled with an officer who tried to handcuff her. After she was handcuffed, she became unresponsive and was pronounced dead a short time later.

One officer has been placed on administrative leave.
