J.C. Penney plans to close five Wisconsin stores as part of a cost-cutting initiative.

The Wisconsin stores are in Fond du Lac, Janesville, Rhinelander, Rice Lake and Wausau.

J.C. Penney announced Wednesday it will cut 2,000 jobs and close 33 stores as the struggling department-store operator tries to get back on the path to profitability.

The Texas-based company said earlier this month it was pleased with its holiday results but declined to give sales figures.

The cuts should save more than $65 million annually. All the job cuts are related to the store closings.
