TEXAS CITY, Texas (AP) - Police say an hour-long standoff with a suspect in the death of a Houston-area man found buried under a chicken coop ended when the suspect was found hanged in the closet of his apartment.

The standoff happened at an apartment complex in Texas City, 35 miles southeast of Houston. Texas City police haven’t revealed the man’s name, but Police Chief Robert Burby says he was suspected in the death of 41-year-old Jesus Leal (hay-SOOS’ lay-AL’) Valdez of Pasadena.

Harris County sheriff’s deputies found the Valdez’s body Saturday buried a couple of feet beneath the backyard coop in northwestern Harris County.

A woman who left the apartment about an hour into the standoff was placed in handcuffs. Police Capt. Joe Stanton says she participated in the standoff.
