SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A jury is deliberating the fate of a Burmese refugee charged in the 2008 killing of a 7-year-old girl in a South Salt Lake neighborhood.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/19AqEYd ) reports that the case against Esar Met went to a jury at noon Friday.

The trial began Jan. 7 with prosecutors saying DNA evidence would prove the 27-year-old refugee kidnapped, raped and killed Hser Ner Moo, leaving the body inside his apartment.

Met’s attorney Michael Peterson says his client is innocent, and the DNA a result of Met’s playing games with the girl.

Met has pleaded not guilty to child kidnapping and aggravated murder. If convicted, he could face 20 years to life in prison.
