GREENWOOD, Ark. (AP) - Officials in Greenwood say the election for the city’s mayoral seat will likely be held in May.

Mayor Del Gabbard resigned last week, citing medical problems. He had one year left in his term, and City Attorney Mike Hamby says state law calls for a special election to fill the vacancy.

City Clerk Sharla Derry tells the Southwest Times Record (https://bit.ly/1eZkzo0 ) that the city will likely hold the mayoral election during the regular primary election in May. But election officials say another option is to hold the election in April, when a municipal election is already planned in Barling.

The Greenwood City Council is set to discuss the issue at its monthly meeting Feb. 3.
