BELLE, W.Va. (AP) - Fire officials say arson is suspected in a fire that burned more than 50 large truck tires at a former strip mine in Belle.

Media outlets report that black smoke from the fire could be seen for several miles.

The fire occurred Monday afternoon at a former strip mine site owned by Development Services, Inc.

Belle Volunteer Fire Department chief Chris Fletcher says the company provided an excavator to bury the tires and extinguish the fire.

Kanawha County fire coordinator C.W. Sigman says the fire appears to have been intentionally set.
