WASHINGTON (AP) - The federal government says its offices in the Washington area will be closed Tuesday because of the winter storm bearing down on the mid-Atlantic and northeastern U.S.

The Office of Personnel Management says non-emergency personnel in and around Washington are granted excused absences for the day. Emergency employees and telework-ready employees are expected to work.

The National Weather Service says the winter storm could bring up to 10 inches of snow Tuesday to New York and Philadelphia and cold air with wind chills as low as 10 degrees below zero later in the day. It warned of heavy winds and hazardous driving conditions throughout the day.

Temperatures are expected to remain in the 20s in many places and could fall into the single digits Tuesday night.
