SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Republican Rep. Chris Stewart is running for a second term in Congress this year, saying he has more work to do as a conservative fighting President Barack Obama’s agenda.

The representative from Utah’s Second Congressional District, which covers the west and south central regions of the state, announced his re-election bid at the Utah State Capitol on Tuesday.

Stewart, a former Air Force pilot and author, was elected in 2012. He defeated Democrat Jay Seegmiller by earning about 62 percent of the vote.

Stewart sits on the influential House Appropriations Committee that oversees all congressional spending bills.

State Sen. Luz Robles, a Democrat from Salt Lake City, announced in September that she is challenging Stewart.
