PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The snow is falling up to an inch an hour in southeastern Pennsylvania, causing hazardous conditions on highways and causing delays on public transit for commuters trying to get home from work.

Public and parochial schools in Philadelphia and many of its suburbs will be closed Wednesday due to a snowstorm that could dump a foot of snow in the region.

The National Weather Service predicts the storm could drop 8 to 12 inches of snow followed by bitterly cold temperatures.

Speed limits have been reduced on all local highways and Pennsylvania transportation officials are urging everyone to stay home if they can. They say road conditions will continue to be hazardous into Wednesday.

In Philadelphia, Mayor Michael Nutter is asking residents to check in on elderly neighbors.
