FREEHOLD, N.J. (AP) - State officials are investigating a crash at a New Jersey horse track that sent five drivers to a hospital and injured some horses.

Horses and drivers collided when the pace car skidded on a sloppy, icy field at the start of the fifth race at Freehold Raceway on Jan. 10.

New Jersey Racing Commission executive director Frank Zanzuccki tells the Asbury Park Press (https://on.app.com/1dLOa5F ) the purpose of the investigation is to try to determine what caused the incident.

Two drivers required hospitalization for their injuries.
