WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) - The trial of a Massachusetts woman charged with killing a pregnant friend and cutting the unborn baby from her womb is scheduled to get started this week.

The Telegram & Gazette (https://bit.ly/1ehz7OM ) reports that jury selection in the trial of 39-year-old Julie Corey is expected to get underway Thursday in Worcester Superior Court.

Corey faces murder and child kidnapping charges in the July 2009 death of 23-year-old Darlene Haynes.

Prosecutors say Corey beat and strangled Haynes, who was eight months pregnant, before taking the fetus. They say Corey faked pregnancy and lied about giving birth to a child.

Corey has been behind bars without bail after pleading not guilty. Her lawyers say there is no evidence that she killed Haynes and came into possession of the newborn “by lawful means.”
