PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley says the U.S. Supreme Court has rejected Charles Russell Rhines‘ appeal of his first degree murder conviction and capital sentence.

Rhines has been on death row for two decades for the slaying of a man during the 1992 burglary of a Rapid City doughnut shop.

Rhines was convicted in the stabbing death of 22-year-old Donnivan Schaeffer during the burglary.

Rhines‘ conviction and death sentence was affirmed by the South Dakota Supreme Court in 1996 but he has pursued appeals in state and federal courts.
