WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - A man who pleaded guilty to two counts of rape in Newark has been sentenced to 37 years in prison.

Thirty-year-old John Paul Thomas was sentenced in Superior Court in Wilmington last week. The News Journal of Wilmington reports (https://delonline.us/1eesWIo) that he had pleaded guilty to the rape charges as well as one count of offensive touching and three counts of burglary last year.

Thomas, a Delaware native, was arrested in 2010 on an oil rig off the Louisiana coast, where he was working. Prosecutors say DNA evidence linked him to the crimes in Newark, which occurred in 2006.

Police say in the rapes, each woman was asleep in her home, awakened by a stranger and raped.

Thomas was also convicted of attempted forcible rape in Louisiana.
