JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (AP) - Police were searching for the former owners of a home in a western Pennsylvania city where two abandoned puppies were found dead, possibly from the cold or starvation.

Johnstown police Chief Craig Foust says officers responded to a report about the dogs on Saturday. The puppies were found dead in a box in the unoccupied home. Johnstown is about 60 miles east of Pittsburgh.

The chief says the house was in “deplorable condition.”

Police were still trying to locate the home’s former owners on Thursday.

The house has been condemned and animal cruelty charges are possible.
