NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - A woman struck by a pickup truck while crossing a Newport street has died.

Fifty-nine-year-old Sharon Gerlach was in a crosswalk on Bellevue Avenue in front of the International Tennis Hall of Fame on Thursday afternoon when she was hit. She died hours later at Rhode Island Hospital.

Police say the truck was driven by 64-year-old Craig Madison of Exeter. He told police he did not see her. He was cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. He did not immediately return a message.

Gerlach co-owned a jewelry store nearby.

It’s the second fatal accident involving someone in a crosswalk in less than a week in Newport. Fifty-six-year-old Robert Silvia was struck last week while using his wheelchair in a crosswalk. He died on Wednesday.
