SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a San Luis Obispo County jail inmate who had contracted the H1N1 flu virus has died.

The Sheriff’s Department said in a statement Monday that Rudy Joseph Silva, a 35-year-old transient with a history of medical problems who had been in the jail since October, complained of illness on Thursday and was taken to Sierra Vista Medical Center where he was diagnosed with H1N1 and sent to intensive care. He died Monday. The exact cause of death will be determined by coroner’s investigators.

The statement says jail staff and inmates had been getting flu screenings and shots even before the incident.

Silva had been held since Oct. 22 on a felony charge of receiving stolen property along with probation violation, petty theft and possession of a controlled substance.
