PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - An Onida man convicted of assaulting a law officer has been sentenced to two years in prison and fined $5,000.
A Sully County jury late last year convicted James Wipf (wihf) on simple assault and petty theft charges. KCCR radio reports he was sentenced Monday.
The charges stemmed from a June 1, 2013, incident in which authorities say Wipf aggressively approached Sheriff Bill Stahl with a knife while Stahl was investigating a stolen laptop case. Wipf backed down when the sheriff drew his gun.
Wipf will be eligible for parole after serving 30 percent of his sentence.
