CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) - A former Central Falls mayor serving a federal prison term for corruption is back in Rhode Island after being ordered to appear in court.

State prisons spokeswoman Susan Lamkins says Charles Moreau arrived at the state prison on Monday and is being held at the intake center.

Moreau had previously been at a federal prison in Maryland. He is less than halfway through a two-year term.

U.S. District Judge John McConnell didn’t explain in his order why he wants Moreau to appear.

But a decision from 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in an unrelated case last year found that the charge to which Moreau pleaded guilty, corruptly accepting a gratuity by an official receiving federal funds, is not a crime.

A Thursday hearing for Moreau is being rescheduled.
